Abstract

The aim is to investigate the local retinal dysfunction in hypertensive patients using multifocal ERG and pattern ERG tests and to assess the sensitivity of mfERG test in prediction of the development of retinopathy by comparing the amplitude and implicit time between hypertensive patients with no signs of retinopathy and controls. This can elucidate the possible value of electrophysiological tests in management of hypertension. Methods: Ninety-eight eyes were included in this case-control study.Twenty-eight eyes belonged to normal healthy subjects without ophthalmic or systemic abnormalities served as a control group. Seventy eyes belonged to patients with systemic hypertension. All subjects were subjected to complete ophthalmic examination, including a review of medical and family history. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy of anterior and posterior segment was done to all patients to evaluate the retinal dysfunction and detect exclusion criteria e.g.maculopathy, cataract, etc. Afterwards, all included eyes were examined using the PERG and mfERG, according to ISCEV standards (latest update). As for mfERG, the N1 and P1 wave amplitude and implicit time from the Central Hexagon and four concentric Rings across the visual field were analyzed, whereas the PERG the amplitude and latency of P50 and N95 were interpreted
