Abstract

Introduction: Obesity and Type 1 DM are considered strong risk factors for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The relationship between vascular and myocardial dysfunction in the context of those two disorders remains a virgin piece of land. Objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate effect of short term obesity and Type 1 DM on myocardial functions and vascular function. A second goal was to evaluate the relationship between vascular dysfunction and nitrous oxide metabolism. Last but not least this study aimed at studying the relationship between vascular and myocardial dysfunction in those two systemic disorders. Subjects and methods: 20 obese children and adolescents, 20 type 1 DM and 20 healthy age and sex matched controls were subjected to Echocardiography including transmural speckle tracking echocardiography to study left and right ventricular functions and to depict which layer of left ventricular myocardium is more involved. The study subjects were also subjected to serum nitric oxide levels measurement and to aortic strain rate measurement by Tissue Doppler Measurement (TDI) to assess vascular function
