Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the extent to which the use of computer-mediated communication, whether synchronous online chats or asynchronous discussion forums, can help learners develop their lexical skills, in a way that increases their vocabulary repertoire and enables them to express themselves more effectively. To this end, the present study tried to investigate which type of CMC better helps learners to acquire a wider range of vocabulary, use it in the correct form, and retain it more than the other. Three intact groups of students, studying in the Advanced Module in a private university in Cairo, were assigned different treatments, synchronous online chats, asynchronous discussion forums, and face-to-face classroom discussions to negotiate the meaning of 12 new lexical items in context. A pre- and posttests design was employed to investigate the effect of each treatment on each of the experimental groups and the control group
