Abstract

Biofilm formation is closely related to the pathogenic processes of Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP), which frequently causes infections that are difficult to treat with antimicrobial agents. The aim of this study was to evaluate biofilm formation ability among clinical KP isolates from Egypt, and to study its correlation with antibiotic resistance, ESBLs production and fimberial genes occurrence. In addition to test the possibility of using essential oils (EOs) and biological enzymes in the fight against KP biofilms alone or in combination with antibiotics as alternative sources. Out of 111 clinical isolates collected from different sources 90 isolates were identified as KP. Antimicrobial susceptibility, phenotyping and genotyping detection of ESBLs and biofilm assay were determined. Effects of 7 EOs and 4 enzymes were tested on KP planktonic cells as well as formation, eradication and cells viability of biofilm. The most effective EOs were analyzed by GC/MS technique, and the major components were determined.Combination of thyme oil, peppermint oil, thymol and menthol with ciprofloxacin was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to evaluate the inhibitory/eradication activity of the active compounds on biofilms
