Abstract

Nowadays, many children with defects and delay in their language development can be observed; when they reach the age of school, they are exposed to difficulties in learning, a problem that turns later to be a learning disability. Many studies have argued that there is a relation between delayed language development and learning disability. Also, they highlighted the effect of the phonological awareness skills on their language development. Thus, scholars seek to make several experiments and strategies to avoid those problems before a child reaches school, and to discover the child who might be exposed to the problem at school because of his skill weakness. Therefore, they design many activities on child skills especially on phonological awareness skills to solve the problem of learning disability at preschool and the age of school. However, what are the norms which we have to follow to compare the normal ability with the delayed one? Do all children of different worlds have the same quantity and quality of the same ability which aids them in going through learning smoothly? Do the differences in languages have a role in acquiring the skills of language and learning? Answers to such questions are the aim of the study. The study clarifies and explains the mental representation of the phonological system in children’s minds through the auditory perception observations as described in the field of impressionistic phonetics. The study uses, as well, the phonetic and phonological skills to be adapted and make norms of the skills, consequently asserting the developmental abilities of phonological awareness of children aged from 5 to 8. It clarifies, thus, the following: 1. Children can predict the word which has more than two syllables easily. 2. There is a significant relation between age and the development of most of auditory skills. 3. The level of general cognitive ability may affect the quality of word recognition and auditory perception skill, specially, at age 5.xxi During the experiment, we observed the children with high degrees at most of phonetic and phonological awareness skills are also superior in the level of word knowledge and expressive language ability; and those skills helped them to learn Arabic literacy in easily way. Furthermore, the majority of children have a high level of auditory discrimination ability, even if, the words have same rhyme. Additionally, they can discriminate the differences between two words have the same rhyme into two identical sentences and choose the correct one semantically. So, the results of this study enabled us to get the normal norms of those abilities of each age group. After all a software application was designed for evaluating the child phonetic and phonological awareness skills and get the rank after evaluation according to the normal average score for each age from 5 to 8 years.
