Abstract The present study focused on the effect of the use of different CBCT resolutions to evaluate their ability to accurately detect the anatomy of mesiobuccal root canals. Eighty maxillary first and second molars fulfilling the inclusion criteria were immersed in (U) shaped wax models, with six teeth embedded in each model. All models were scanned using Scanora 3DX CBCT scanner at different resolution (standard& high). After that, the scans were assessed by two radiologists twice with two weeks interval for inter and intra- observer agreement using On Demand software Viewer. The observer used the three orthogonal planes (axial, coronal and sagittal) to detect the MB root canal morphology according to vertucci classification and they were free to adjust the brightness and contrast of the image according to their needs. from the 80 maxillary molars, 28 MB roots had type IV root canal anatomy and 17 had type I after the clearing and staining technique (gold standard). The results of this study revealed that the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of CBCT images increase as the resolution increase. However, statistical analysis showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the standard and high resolutions in the ability to detect MB root canal (p < 0.05). Result from CBCT scans were compared with those from clearing technique and assessed for accuracy. Statistical analysis showed very good reliability of intra and inter observer agreement regarding clearing technique, standard and high CBCT scans. |
