Abstract This work was conducted to investigate the immunostimulant effects of Panax ginseng and Aloe vera extracts against Salmonella typhimurium infection in rats. A total of 72 male albino rats were divided into 6 equal groups. group I served as a control group. group II: received Panax ginseng orally (250mg/kg) for 4 weeks. group III: received Aloe vera orally (200mg/kg), for 4 weeks. group IV: was infected with Salmonella typhimurium orally (1.5 x 109cell/count) at 21 day of the experiment. group V & VI were given Panax ginseng (250mg/kg) and Aloe vera (200mg/kg) respectively for the whole experimental period and infected with Salmonella typhimurium on day 21 as group IV. The results showed that Panax ginseng and Aloe vera extracts caused significant reduction and elimination of bacterial load in feces of infected treated rats and enhancement in serum microbial activity. Significant increase in Hb, RBCs and PCV as well as increased WBCs and lymphocytes count was recorded. Also, they reversed the levels of hepatic and renal damage markers, modulate decrease cytokines that deteriorated by Salmonella typhimurium as (TNF, IL-2) and IgA level , enhancement IL-10 Level, phagocytic activity and Lysozyme activity but T. Lymphocyte transformation increased only in Panax ginseng group Histopathological examination of liver and kidney tissues was in concurrence with the biochemical results. Our results suggest that Panax ginseng extract and Aloe vera extract have prophylactic e effect and immunomodulatory potentials in rats infected with Salmonella typhimurium. |
