Abstract Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) refers to the accumulation of excess fat in the hepatic tissues. Patients with NAFLD may develop non- alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). NASH is associated with liver cell inflammation and different degrees of fibrosis. NASH is a serious health condition that may lead to liver cirrhosis which occurs due to sustained liver damage. Although the therapeutic effects of folic acid against a rat model of high- fat diet-induced NAFL was previously investigated, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report linking the probable molecular effect of folic acid with the expression of mature miR-21, -34a, and -122 as well as their targeted genes HBP1, SIRT1, and SREBP-1c. This may introduce promising therapeutic approaches in managing and treating NAFL by targeting distinct pathways implicated in its onset and progression. |
