Abstract

The Nile Delta Basin can be considered as the most extensive natural gas and condensate resource, not only in Egypt but also in the Middle East region. The present study investigates the Oligocene organic-rich fine clastics from the source rock perspective. The study based on the source rock evaluation methods (quantity, quality, and thermal maturity) using LECO TOC%, Rock-Eval Pyrolysis, and Vitrinite Reflectance (Ro%) measurements for a large set of cutting-samples from 8 wells (5 onshore and 3 offshore). Also the Gas chromatography (GC) analyses were performed on 9 samples from 8 wells to reveal the depositional environment and elucidate the chemical transformations during diagenesis and catagenesis. The Gas chromatography-Mass spectroscopy analyses were performed on 9 samples for 8 wells, which can be used as facies and maturity indicator. Additionally, 1D basin modelling was carried out for 4 wells to investigate the burial history of the study area and their thermal histories as well as the hydrocarbon generation levels and the timing of the hydrocarbon generation. The Oligocene sediments of the onshore wells have organic matter belong mainly to Type III and rarely Type IV kerogens
