Abstract

Introduction: Degenerative joint disease is a term that describes the chronic condition of cartilage degeneration of joints that manifest with stiffness in joints, pain and impaired movements and function, and it is a broad term to describe the Osteoarthritis and the osteoarthrosis according to DC/TMD 2014. Objectives: The aim of our systematic review is to assess qualitatively and quantitatively the comparative effectiveness of minimally invasive techniques for management of degenerative joint diseases regarding pain and mouth opening improvement. Data sources: Studies identified by electronic databases, Hand searching relevant journals and searching national literature. Study eligibility criteria: Types of Studies: Randomized controlled trials and Quasi-randomized clinical trials. Participants: Patients diagnosed with degenerative joint disease clinically and confirmed with an imaging technique (MRI, CT scan or CBCT). Interventions: Lavage, Hyaluronic Acid intra-articular injection in single visit, hyaluronic Acid intraarticular injection in multiple visits, PRP injection, PRGF injection and steroids injection. Outcomes types: Primary outcomes include Pain by VAS (at Rest and during function) and maximal mouth opening in mm. Data Extraction: customized data extraction forma on Excel done by one review author and reviewed by second author and conflicts resolved by consensus. Study selection: Total of eight studies included in the review, one study excluded from data analysis and four studies included in the meta-analysis. Summary measures: Mean difference{u2016} was calculated to measure the treatment effect for the outcomes pain and maximal mouth opening{u2016} and Metaanalyses were done by calculating mean difference for MMO in millimeters and standardized mean difference for (VAS 0-10 scale and VAS 0-100 scale) using the fixed effect model
