Abstract In this study, series of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber reinforced with different concentrations of Semi-reinforcing furnace (SRF) carbon black with constant loading of Silica were prepared. Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) was used as the matrix phase for this study. The filler used was a blend of Silica and SRF. Solvent penetration characteristics, mechanical properties (static and dynamic) ,compression behavior and compression set , tribological properties (abrasive resistance) as well as the electrical conductivity temperature dependence for these samples were investigated. The transport studies of toluene as a solvent through NBR/SRF composites have been investigated. The effect of filler content on the diffusion process was analyzed. The physical strength modification by SRF filler loading to NBR matrix have been confirmed by stress- strain examination. The abrasive resistance and compression set of all samples have been studied. The tensile strength and elongation features of NBR have been found to be significantly improved upon SRF loading. Ponte- Castaneda model predicts our data reasonably well. Electrical properties of rubber vulcunaizate were analyzed. The electrical conductivity of the rubber composites as a function of SRF loading indicated a percolation phenomenon; this phenomenon is discussed and correlated to that observed from both solvent penetration and mechanical properties. The vi electrical conductivity as a function of reciprocal temperature of all tested samples shows a satisfactory linear fit regions revealing the Arrhenious type (two thermally activated processes) |
