Abstract

Summary
This was a prospective interventional (non-experimental) follow up study of patients who underwent PPI at our unit in the department of Urology, Faculty of Medicine, Beni-Suef University. The study started from August 2020 till July 2022.
Our study aimed to investigate patient and partner satisfaction after implantation of a penile prosthesis and to demonstrate the effect of time on their opinion i.e. compare their early postoperative opinions to those over 3 months then over 6 months PO.
The results showed the following:
We translated and validated the modified version of the EDITS to suit and adapt to the Egyptian and Arab culture. The reliability of the Arabic version was confirmed by the high internal consistency (0.979, 0.951) and good inter domain correlations (0.978, 0.942) for both patient and partner domains respectively.
The mean age for the men in our study was 54.7±8.4 with the oldest being 69 years old and the youngest 36 years old. However, our mean spouse age was 32.9±4.6. Reviewing the risk factors associated with ED in our patients, DM was recorded as the number one risk factor followed by smoking and HTN.
Over 80% of the patients in our study showed a decreased level of anxiety after consulting with the doctor before the operation. More than 95% of the patients reported a positive experience regarding their first postoperative days with over half of them exceeding their expectations. Almost all men would recommend the procedure to friend.
We found that PPI was able to satisfy the vast majority of our study population and their partners, after 3 months (85%, 90%) and after 6 months (90.8%, 84%) post-operative respectively.
The mean satisfaction among females at 3rd months was significantly higher than the males. However, at 6th months the mean satisfaction of males was significantly higher than their wives.
Conclusion:
The AM- EDITS questionnaire we used in our study is a reliable and valid instrumentthat could be used to evaluate satisfaction in Arabic-speaking patients and their partners after PPI. PPI achieves high levels of satisfaction among husbands and their wives. Following up the satisfaction in men, the satisfaction significantly increased from 3 to 6 months in contrary to females who showed a significantly decreasing level of satisfaction from the 3rd to the 6th month’s follow-up period.
