Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated intolerance to gluten which affects 1% of the general population and is characterized by small-bowel mucosal damage and subsequent malabsorption. More recently, CD has been recognized as a multisystem disorder which may affect other extra intestinal organs, such as the skin, thyroid, heart, nervous system, pancreas and liver. Individuals with CD are at increased risk of primarily developing two different clinical forms: cryptogenic liver disorder and autoimmune liver disorder However, until now, it remains unknown whether these two forms of liver disease are really different entities or only different severities of the same disorder.
Objective: To screen children and adolescents with autoimmune hepatitis for the presence of celiac disease and screening children and adolescents with celiac disease for the presence of autoimmune hepatitis.
Subjects and Methods: This was a Cross sectional study that was conducted at Ain Shams University Hospital (Pediatric Hepatology Clinc and Gastroenterology Clinic). The study included 2 groups: group A: 20 Children and adolescents diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis following up in Pediatric Hepatology clinic. group B: 20 Children and adolescents diagnosed with celiac disease following up in Pediatric Gastro enterology Clinic. The study duration was six months.
Results: In our study, Glutein free diet was main line of treatment in all patients of celiac disease. Our results showed that, there was no statistically significant difference between autoimmune hepatitis and celiac disease regarding Wt z score, Ht z score and BMI z score. Our results showed that, there was no statistically significant difference between autoimmune hepatitis and celiac disease regarding sex distribution. 13 (65.0%) among Autoimmune hepatitis patients and 14 (70.0%) among Celiac disease patients.
Conclusion: The current study showed that, celiac serology markers were negative in all autoimmune hepatitis patients and all markers of autoimmune hepatitis were negative in celiac disease patients. Thus there was no association between autoimmune hepatitis and celiac disease in our study.
