Abstract

Steel beams with a single web opening have been used extensively in the last decades as new structural elements. These beams have various structural and architectural advantages as they allow the ease of services such as pipe lines and cable trays. Moreover, these beams have an appealing architectural appearance as well as an economic construction advantage. Behavior of steel beams with a single web opening subjected to static or cyclic loading has been studied thoroughly by many former researchers. However, there is a research gap in investigating the behavior of steel beams with a single web opening subjected to fatigue loading and the effect of introducing a circular web opening with different sizes and locations along the beam span on the normal stress fatigue life of steel beams. The focus of this research was on the verification of finite element models simulating steel beams with a single web opening subjected to static and cyclic loading using the finite element softwares ANSYS and ABAQUS. Then, a new finite element model was introduced to simulate and investigate the behavior of steel beams with a single web opening subjected to fatigue loading through numerical analysis of full scale short span simply supported I-section steel beams with a single web opening that were subjected to fully reversed uniformly distributed vertical load. A parametric study was performed to investigate the effect of two geometric parameters of significant impact (web opening size and web opening location) on the normal stress fatigue life using the finite element software ANSYS. It was concluded that, normal stress fatigue categories that are used by existing steel design specifications to design steel members against fatigue failures were proved to be either unsafe or over conservative when applied to steel beams with a single web opening. However, suitable fatigue categories were suggested to guarantee safety against normal stress fatigue failures of steel beams with a single circular web opening of various configurations taking economic design into consideration.
