Abstract

Aim: to evaluate the efficacy of avian eggshell powder in occluding dentinal tubules in comparison to CPP-ACP desensitizing agent (Tooth Mousse) for treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. Methodology: A number of 40 dentin discs were used. All dentin discs were immersed in 6% citric acid for 2 minutes to simulate hypersensitive dentin. Dentin discs were randomly divided into two groups (20 discs/group); intervention (prepared eggshell slurry) group and comparator (Tooth Mousse) group. The two groups were further divided into 2 subgroups (10 discs/ subgroup) according to immersion protocol. In the first subgroup, dentin discs were immersed in artificial saliva for 4 weeks whereas in the second subgroup, dentin discs underwent acid challenge using 6% citric acid for one minute. Environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) evaluation of dentin discs was carried out to calculate percentage of dentinal tubules occlusion, while hydraulic conductance test was used to evaluate percentage reduction of dentin permeability. ESEM analysis and hydraulic conductance test were carried out after each of the following stages; simulation of hypersensitive dentin, application of desensitizing agents, and immersion in either immersion protocol. Significance level was set at P {u2264} 0.05. Statistical analysis was performed using with SPSS 22.0.Results: The percentage of dentinal tubules occlusion results revealed that the prepared eggshell slurry group showed significantly higher percentage of dentinal tubules occlusion compared to Tooth Mousse group after application of the desensitizing agents. While results of the percentage reduction of dentin permeability revealed that there was no significant difference between both groups
