Abstract Purpose: This study was done to examine the impact of yoga on postpartum depression. Subjects: Forty primipara women with postpartum depression (PPD) randomly chosen from Kasr El Ainy University Hospital in Cairo complaining of postpartum depression at least one month after childbirth shared in this study. The study extended for 9 months from June 2019 to March 2020. with ages and BMI from 20-35 yrs, less than 30 kg/m². respectively. Women scores in the Zung scale ranged from 50-69 (mild and moderate depression). Women are excluded from the study if they had a present or past history of any psychiatric disorders, substance abuse (apart from nicotine), and recent anorexia, suicidal ideas, or other contraindications with yoga, as cardiac or respiratory dysfunction, uncontrolled DM, hypertension, or convulsive fits Design: Design of this study was experimental study (two groups pre-test post-test) Randomized controlled trial. All women were divided into two equal groups (A&B): group A (Control group): It comprised of 20 women and treated by antidepressant drugs only for 12 weeks. group B (Study group): It comprised of 20 women and treated by the same antidepressants as in group A and yoga program, 50 minutes daily,7 days per week for 12 weeks (Total 84 sessions). Methods: BMI was assessed by standard weight-height scale and depression was assessed by Zung self-rating depression scale pre and post test for both groups A and B. Results: The results of this study revealed that there was no significant difference between both groups in the mean values of age, weight, height, and BMI (P > 0.05).Within groups, there was significant decrease in the Self Depression Scale (SDS) of both groups A and B post-treatment compared with pre-treatment (P = 0.0001) with rate of diminish 9.53% and 16.68% respectively |
