Abstract The striped piggy Pomadasys stridens is a very important commercial and economical species in the Gulf of Suez. The morphometric measurements and meristic characters, Fisheries statistics, Biological studies and Demographic structure of the species were studied. Age determinations based on otolith readings, showed that the life span of the fish is six years for male and five years for female. The most frequent age groups were age group two for male and age group three for female. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L∞ = 21.03 cm, K = 0.43/y, to = -0.24/y, w∞ = 118.72 g and Ø = 2.28, for the pooled data. The fish grows pattern exhibited a negative allometric type (b<3). P. stridens start to be ripe in January and reach its full ripeness with peak in March and April, indicating to the spawning season. The monthly length frequency distributions indicated that recruitment to the fishery occurs during autumn months. The dominant length group is 10.0:10.9 and 11.0-11.9 cm. The total, natural and fishing mortality coefficients were estimated as 1.73, 0.72 and 1.01 year-1 respectively. The estimated current exploitation rate (E = 0.62), indicated that the population of Pomadasys stridens in Suez Gulf is overexploited. Some management regulations are proposed. |
