Abstract

The groundwater in the environs of Ismailia canal presents a very important and main resource of water for several purposes in the Eastern Nile Delta region that is densely populated region including extensive agricultural activities in addition to several land reclamation projects and industrial activities. Field and laboratory measurements, such as subsurface temperature, physicochemical parameters of the surface water of Ismailia canal and the groundwater in the environs of Ismailia canal and the hydrogeologic settings of the main aquifer in the study area, were used for identifying the current situation of the available water resources in the study area and their quality for drinking and irrigation uses. Lithostratigraphically, the Quaternary aquifer in the studied area composed mainly of the Late Pliocene–Pleistocene Mit Ghamr Formation that belongs to the Pre-Nile river sediments and Late Pleistocene–Holocene Bilqas Formation, which belongs to the Neo-Nile river system. Three stratigraphic cross-sections were constructed based on 11 drilled wells (ranging from 35m to 70m depth) that were distributed around and along Ismailia canal, to demonstrate the geologic setting of the Quaternary aquifer. However, the studied Quaternary aquifer can be subdivided into two types of sediment: a sand-dominated sediment that resembles the eastern and southeastern parts and a clay-dominated sediment that occupied the northern and northwestern parts of the study area.
