Abstract

Summary
Scleroderma is a disease of unknown etiology affecting the connectivetissue and characterized by sclerotic alteration of the skin and some other organ systems.
Histological findings on the skin are: massive deposition of synthesized collagen, perivascular mononuclear cell infiltrate and vascular damages.[ Sapadin AN et al., 2017 ].
As a reliable and quantitative imaging tool, high frequency ultrasound (HFUS) has been increasingly used for assessing skin thickness in SSc [Kaloudi et al., 2010].
Although HFUS has good sensitivity and specificity in measuring skin thickness [Ihn et al., 1995] notable similarities in skin thickness between SSc patients and healthy controls were observed [Akesson et al., 1986].
HFUS may eventually distinguish three phases of skin involvement of SSc—edema, fibrosis[Hesselstrand et al., 2008].
In patients with dc-SSc, skin thickness is used as a monitor for disease activity, severity, and mortality in diffuse scleroderma.
Increasing Skin thickeness associated with new or worsening involvement of internal organs is commonly associated with increase mortality observed in early diffuse scleroderma [Shand L et al., 2007 and Clements PJ et al., 2001 ].
Worsening mRSS is linked to with a higher mortality rate, as well as bothnegative renal and Cardiovascular outcomes [Clements PJ et al., 2000 ]
In our study on 30 case of systemic sclerosis and 40 control we asses skin thickness and echogenicity by ultrasound in comparison to modified rodnan skin score , inflamatory markers and activity indecis from which result is significant and there was positive colleration between skin thickness and modified rodnan skin score with cut off point 1.4 at mean skin thickness.
