Abstract
Background: Nerve block is a technique whereby local anesthetic solutions are infiltrated around a nerve (perineurally) to provide anesthesia and analgesia. Nerve block for intraoperative and postoperative pain management is associated with improved analgesia, fewer opioid-related adverse events, earlier ambulation and shorter hospital stay when compared with intravenous opioid analgesia alone.
Aim of the Work: To assess the efficacy of paracervical block in reducing pain in women with nulliparous cervical os undergoing IUD insertion.
Patients and Methods: This is a randomized controlled trial study which was conducted at tertiary care hospital at Ain Shams University Maternity hospital and performed on total 150 women with nulliparous cervical os attending contraception clinic for insertion of IUD in a period from July 2019 to July 2021.
Results: Patients’ pain perception during IUD insertion and 6-hours post IUD insertion was statistically significantly lower in block group than no block group.
Conclusion: The paracervical nerve block may be useful for reducing patient-reported pain during IUD insertion, but its use must be balanced with a careful consideration of the risks associated with this nerve blockade with no need for further analgesia after IUD placement.
