Abstract

Background, dermoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic
technique that allows the observation of morphological features that
are not visible to the naked eye. Dermoscopy is helpful for the
diagnosis of many nail diseases as it allows evaluation of parts of nail
apparatus including the nail plate surface, the nail matrix, the nail bed,
the periungual folds and the hyponychium.
Onychomycosis is very common nail disease, it accounts for up
to 50% of nail diseases and 30% of all superficial fungal infection.
Onychomycosis is essentially diagnosed by fungal culture but it needs
experienced microbiologist and also expensive technique so many
dermatologists tend to make a presumptive diagnosis of
onychomycosis and prescribe the treatment without mycological
confirmation.
Objectives, this work aimed to evaluate demoscopy as
alternative low cost tool for diagnosis of onychomycosis instead of
high cost fungal culture.
Patients and methods, this study was carried out on 44 patients
with a clinically suspected onychomycosis. For each patient, digital
dermoscopic imaging of nail was done. Also, nail scraping from all
cases were collected and cultured on sabouraud’s dextrose agar
medium and dermatophyte test agar medium.
Clinical results: In our study, the age of our patients ranged
between 11-68 years with a mean age of 37 years. As regard gender of
the studied cases, there were 4 males (9.1%) and 40 females (90.9%).
