Abstract Polypharmacy is becoming more common in an ageing population with numerous chronic diseases and it can be difficult for geriatricians to manage (GP). Medications when taken correctly can help prolong life and reduce symptoms. Polypharmacy can have negative consequences when medications are used inappropriately, especially in older adults with changed pharmacokinetics and pharmaco-dynamics. The most prominent risk factor for polypharmacy is advanced age. Attitudes and beliefs of older adults has a noticeable impact on their overall health especially with the use of medications. Nurses are aware of the dangers of polypharmacy they are responsible for ensuring the proper preparation and administration to achieve medication utilization safety. Older adults’ knowledge about medications positively related with age, sex, marital status and education level. Moreover, attitude and beliefs of older adults towards polypharmacy (willing to deprescribe medications) positively related with the number of their medications. In addition, attitudes and beliefs of older adults towards polypharmacy (willing to deprescribe medications) negatively related with total mean score of older adults’ knowledge about medications. Also, the majority of older adults with insufficient knowledge about medications have no willing to deprescribe medications. |
