Abstract Introduction : Office hysteroscopy (OH) is proven as a strong diagnostic tool. Intracavitary uterine lesions can be identified and treated with ease using office hysteroscopy. Although a large numbers of office diagnostic hysteroscopies are being done, pain was the most prevalent reason for the investigation not being completed. Aim of this study : The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture analgesia on pain management in office hysteroscopy. Patients and methods: This study was carried out on 56 patients and they were classified into 2 groups, acupuncture group included 26 women who received acupuncture analgesia before diagnostic office hysteroscopy and control group included 30 women who received diagnostic office hysteroscopy without premedication nor cervical preparing. At the end of the procedure the total duration of the procedure was recorded ,the patients were asked to score pain experienced during the procedure on VAS and.failure cases recorded. Results : The study revealed that acupuncture analgesia (AA) achieved significant control of OH procedural pain with median VAS (0.00 (0.00-7.00). AA decreased procedural duration as the mean duration of the procedure in minuets was shorter in acupuncture group (1.46±0.50) when compared with control group (1.80±0.55) with (p-value 0.021). AA had no effect on OH procedural failure as a result of cervical stenosis as there was no significant statistical difference between acupuncture group and control group according to procedural failure (2(7.7%), 2(6.7%)) respectively with (p-value 1.00). Although it was not the aim of the work but cervical stenosis was found to be a risk factor for OH procedural failure, also increase procedural duration was found to be associated with increase procedural pain. By analyzing and processing the data obtained from the history and evaluation, our study declared that : The use of acupuncture analgesia could be useful in the pain management in OH. Acupuncture analgesia is successfully able to reduce procedural pain score which is significantly less when compared to control group. It is also significantly able to reduce the procedural duration. Although acupuncture analgesia isn’t able to decrease failure rate but it might have a promising role in pain management in OH. Acupuncture’s main drawbacks is that it takes time and is connected with some patient discomfort, but it is still acceptable. |
