Abstract Umbilical Cord blood collection has many benefits in terms of transplantation due to its cell content; moreover, it has some other advantages, it has almost no confrontation with viruses or microorganisms during the intrauterine period and it is obtainable without any contact with the newborn. Along with all these advantages, cord blood has a restriction in that it is usually appropriate only for children or adults (Amin, et al., 2016). Stem cells taken from the umbilical cord to be used in stem cell therapy are supposed to be preserved under appropriate conditions. Storing umbilical cord blood in liquid nitrogen tanks for long periods is called cord blood banking. It has been proven that cord blood can be preserved in the laboratories for up to 15 years in modern facilities (Edwin et al., 2016). The use of stem cells and cord blood is a very comprehensive topic. Maternity nurses are supposed to inform pregnant women on this subject during the prenatal period since it is highly detailed and conventional thoughts on these matters are very dominant (Patyal et al., 2018). Summary 113 The study aimed to assess knowledge of maternity nurses regarding cord blood collection and assess the attitude of maternity nurses regarding cord blood collection. The study design was descriptive study design was used; it was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital. The convenient sample used, the sample was 250 nurses who work in the previously mentioned setting were invited to participate in this study regardless of their age, sex, experience, level of education and position. Tools of Data Collection: Self-administered structured questionnaire sheet assesses general characteristics of the study nurses include age, qualifications, years of experience and attending previous training. Moreover, it has assessed nurses knowledge regarding the source of blood collection whether it from venous, arterial or from both vessels, advantages and the disadvantages of the use of cord blood, assess nurse’s knowledge regarding the diseases that can be treated with umbilical cord blood transplantation such as malignancies, immunodeficiency disorders, bone marrow failure, haemoglobinopathies and the metabolic disorders and it has Summary 114 assessed nurse’s knowledge regarding the recommended procedures during cord banking and the precautions during the collection of blood in a special bags that containing anticoagulant agents, the importance of processing and freezing the collected blood immediately, the recommended temperature for storing and following the infection control precautions it also contained data related to the importance of blood banks accreditation and the cord blood standards. Besides, a Likert scale was used to assess nurses’ attitudes regarding cord blood collection and stem cells. Results:- 41.2% of the studied nurses their age ranged between 20<30 years with mean 26.1 ±3.4 years. 51.6% of the studied nurses were technical institute. 56.4% of the studied nurses had years of experience between 5 <10 years. 93.2 % of the studied nurses did not attend training related to umbilical cord blood collection. 63.2% of the studied nurses had incorrect knowledge related to umbilical cord blood collection, while 36.8%of them had correct knowledge related to umbilical cord blood collection. Summary 115 45.6% of the studied nurses had positive attitude to umbilical cord blood collection, while 33.6% of them had negative attitude to umbilical cord blood collection and 20.8% of them had uncertain attitude to umbilical cord blood collection. There were statistically significant relations between the knowledge of studied nurses regarding umbilical cord blood collection and their age, qualification and attending training courses related to stem cells (p-value < 0.05). There was a statistically insignificant relationship between the knowledge of studied nurses regarding umbilical cord blood collection and their years of experience (p-value > 0.05). There was a statistically significant relationship between the knowledge of studied nurses regarding umbilical cord blood collection and their source of knowledge (p-value < 0.05). There were highly statistically significant relations between the attitude of studied nurses regarding umbilical cord blood collection and their age, their qualification, Summary 116 and years of experience (p-value <0.0001& <0.005 respectively). There were statistically significant relations between the attitude of studied nurses regarding umbilical cord blood collection and they’re (p-value <0.05). There was a statistically insignificant relationship between the attitudes of studied nurses regarding umbilical cord blood collection and attending training courses related to stem cells (p-value > 0.05). There was a highly statistically significant relationship between the attitude of studied nurses regarding umbilical cord blood collection and their source of knowledge (pvalue < 0.01). There was a highly significant correlation between the total knowledge score of studied nurses & their total attitude score regarding umbilical cord blood collection (pvalue <0.01). |
