Abstract

Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) is a dicotyledonus plant belongs to family Linaceae, which consisting of about 200 species of flowering plant. Majority of species in Linaceae are grown as ornamental plant, however Linum usitatissimum is considered as one of the most economically industrial crop, food ingredient for human and animal and traditional medicinal plant. Recently, flax plant became an important industrial crop; however, all biomass can be used as a raw material for many purposes. Flax oil is a rich source of the following unsaturated fatty acids: oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid (Goyal et al., 2014). It was grown in Egypt over 5,000 years ago ancient Egyptian times for rapping their mummies in linen clothes (Bakry et al., 2012). Flaxseed is now attracting interest as a food due to its high fiber content, high content of bioactive phenolic compounds mainly lignans and high content of the essential omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (Dean, 2003).
