Abstract

Actinomycetes are diverse group of Gram positive filamentous bacteria. They belong to the order Actinomycetales, Phylum: Firmicutes, Class: Actinobacteria, Subclass: Actinobacteridae. They are free living, saprophytic bacteria and a major source for the production of antibiotics, widely distributed in natural and manmade environments and play an important role in the degradation of organic matter They are the most economically and biotechnologically valuable prokaryotes able to produce wide range of bioactive secondary metabolites, such as antibiotics, antitumor agents, immunosuppressive agents, enzymes, cosmetics, vitamins, nutritional materials, herbicides, pesticides and also well known as a rich source of antibiotics and bioactive molecules.
