Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a common neuro-developmental disorder characterized by impairment in social communication and restricted, repetitive behavior patterns. These symptoms are present from early developmental period and limit everyday functioning. It develops before the age of 36 months and persists into adulthood causing lifelong disability.
Parents of a child affected with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are also shown to suffer from huge depression and decrease physical and mental health when particularly in comparison with parents of children of normal development or when compared to the general population.
Aim of the work
Assessment of the quality of life of parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder attending Alexandria University Children’s Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt. Also to synthesize the available evidence in the literature concerning the assessment of the quality of life of parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and to highlight quality of life associated factors.
Material and methods
We conducted this study in two phases; First phase; we conducted a cross sectional study in Alexandria University Children’s Hospital (AUCH) parents of autistic children have interviewed independently and completed all questionnaires completely, without adding special requirements using SF-12v2.Second phase; A systemic review & Meta-Analysis was done with all steps (formulate PICO, Comprehensive search strategy and data collection and analysis).
The most important findings in our study were
The main finding emerged from first phase cross sectional study is that there is a significant decrease in mean of Physical & Mental Components Summary of parents of the Autistic Child Vs. parents of normal developing child in Alexandria, Egypt {PCS [(38.58 ± 6.9) Vs (56.48 ± 1.37)],MCS {(24.25 ± 7.89) Vs (52.1 ± 7.49) respectively), followed by second phase meta-analysis study which provides an evidence of compromised QOL of parents of autistic children compared to parents of normal child as physical QoL(SMD -0.628; 95%CI -0.981 to -0.275; P < 0.001) & Mental QoL(SMD -1.081; 95%CI -1.538 - -0.624; P < 0.001) that would need to be taken into consideration and discussed by healthcare providers who are in connection with the parents.
