Abstract

First line manager authority, is closely associated with the power to obtain changes, to inspire behaviors which affect staff nurses and make them to interact collectively and empower staff nurses to participate in decision making. The study aimed to assess relationship between first line manager authority and staff nurses’ participation in decision making. Study design: Descriptive correlational design was utilized to conduct this study. Study setting: The study was conducted at Benha University Hospital in medical and surgical units. Subjects: Included all the head nurses 56 and a convenient of 301 staff nurses who are working at the above mentioned setting. Tools of data collection: Consisted of two main tools; (I): First line manager authority questionnaire and tool; (II): Staff nurses participation in decision making questionnaire. Results: Showed that, three quarters (75.0%) of first line managers had high level of authority and the majority of them (80.4%) had high levels of authority on their staff. Also, nearly two thirds of studied staff nurses (65.2%) had low levels of participation in decision making and the majority (88.0%) of them had low levels of participation in decision making related to professional recruitment domains. While, nearly one fifth of studied staff nurses (19.6%) had high level of participation in decision making related to collaboration activities. Conclusion: The study concluded that, there was a negative statistical significant correlation between first line managers authority and staff nurses participation in decision making. Recommendations: The study recommended that, conducting continuing education programs and training courses for first line manager about: management functions (clinical, managerial, professional skills) and how it can be used to empower staff nurses to participate in decision making.
