Abstract

This thesis provides an introduction to the ancient Egyptian medicine, pharmacology and the medical
Sources of our know ledge in this field. It discusses both the role of the physicians and some of their
contributions and also some of the pharmacists in Graeco- Roman Egypt.
The thesis reveals the important influences of the Egyptian civilization on the other ones. Through this study, it is obvious that both the Greek and the Roman civilizations had been greatly affected by the Egyptian one. Also the relation between the religion and the medical practices is apparent, as the priests of the temples played a very important role in the medical field not only in ancient Egypt but also
during the Graeco- Roman era. Their role was not only a religious one but they also worked as physicians inside the temples. The important figures
of the Greeks and Romans such as Hippocrates and Galen, acknowledged the contributions of the Egyptian medicine and pharmacology in the Greek
and Roman aspects of medicine and pharmacology.
