Abstract

Summary
Glass ionomer cements are a group of dental cements suitable for the use in patients with high caries prevalence. GICs had undergone several modifications to enhance their properties and decrease their limitations120.
The purpose of the present study is to assess the anti-bacterial effect, compressive and diametral tensile strength of GIC with DBTE in vitro conditions.
The experimental GIC was prepared by mixing 1%, 2% and 4% of DBTE within the powder of conventional GIC . The CHX is also mixed with the GIIC separately. This resulted in creation of four groups from the modified materials, in addition to the unmodified GIC as a control group.
In this study Specimens were prepared by using Teflon molds constructed for each test. Antibacterial test against S.mutans was performed using disc diffusion test and assessed by inhibition zone diameter. Compressive strength test and diametral tensile strength were done by using universal testing machine.
The results showed there was a significant difference between groups. GIC that was modified with CHX showed the highest inhibition zone followed by GIC modified 4% DBTE, GIC modified 2% DBTE and GIC modified 1% DBTE, while the unmodified GIC showed the lowest value.
The result revealed that there was a significant difference in the values of compressive strength in different groups. The highest value of compressive strength was found with the control samples followed by DBTE 4% modified GIC, DBTE1% modified GIC. However the lowest value was found with samples DBTE 2% modified GIC .
The final result in diametral tensile strength test showed no significant difference in the values in different groups. The highest value of diametral tensile strength was found with the DBTE 1% modified GIC followed by DBTE 2% modified GIC, with samples DBTE 4% modified GIC. While the lowest value was found in the Control samples.
Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that antibacterial properties of GIC modified DBTE cause an increase in the antibacterial effect and the diametral tensile strength but cause decrease in compressive strength than conventional one.

Conclusions
Based on the findings of the present study it can be concluded that:
1. The addition of DBTE by 4%, 2% and 1% to conventional GIC enhanced the antibacterial effect of GIC against S.mutans .
2. The compressive strength of conventional GIC yet was not improved by the addition of DBTE, while the diametral tensile strength was improved.
