Abstract

In this introductory chapter, an attempt is made to identify the problem of
the present study effectiveness of the jolly phonics strategy in developing
the pronunciation skills of primary schoolers. This chapter addresses the
importance of English, teaching ELT in Egypt, problems of teaching
English, context of the problem, questions of the study, aims of the study,
significance of the study and definition of terms. Finally, a general layout
of the thesis is presented.
1.0. The importance of English as a Foreign Language (EFL)
According to Khamkhien (2010), English has increasingly become the
medium of communication around the world both in global and local
contexts. Due to the importance of English, every country asks its people
to become well equipped as for English performance.
Levis (2005), states that the learning English language has become an
important competent of living in a globalized world and this increased the
importance of communicating with each other. According to Shehata
(2017) as cited in Abu-Rahma (2008:7), English is a vehicle of
communication which becomes an international language used for
communication and understanding among members of the international
community. This significant role should be reflected in English language
teaching and learning programs worldwide, including those in Egypt.
Due to its importance, English has the same goal for human
communication. The language itself has an important task as a tool of
