Abstract The main objective of this study is the treatment of dairy wastewater from a plant for manufacturing of dairy products located in the industrial Zone of New Damietta City, Damietta, Egypt. To achieve this aim Physical-Chemical characteristics of raw dairy wastewater determined. chemical and biological treatment for dairy wastewater sample were carried out. Physico-Chemical treatment involved two processes; Chemical Coagulation/Precipitation (C/P) and advanced oxidation process by Fenton’s reaction. While, biological treatment includes Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) and Effective Microorganism (EM) technologies. It was concluded that the biological treatment for dairy wastewater is the best choice due to the high biodegradability (BOD/COD ratio) of this effluent. All biological treatment approaches that employed were more effective with raw dairy wastewater than those applied for alum-lime pretreatment wastewater this may be due to the chemical added which had negative impact on microorganisms responsible for the degradation of organic matter. SBR using beet cane factory activated sludge was more effective than domestic sludge. characteristics of the treated effluent after continuous treatment by EM were complying with the permissible limits for wastewater discharge into sewer network. Therefore, pre acclimated EM technology was the most effective method for the treatment of high organic load dairy wastewater. |
