Abstract

This study was performed to detect the dispersal of Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica and S.aureus as well as to reveal their antibiogram and spread of ESBLs and mecA genes in the isolates from retail beef and chicken meat. Eighty-two beef and chicken meat samples have been picked up from butcher’s stores and restaurants in Cairo and Giza, Egypt. Escherichia coli was isolated from 15% of examined beef and chicken meat samples as 52%, 41%, 12% and 1% from raw beef, raw chickens, beef ready for consumption and chicken ready for consumption samples, respective. Salmonella enterica was detected from 1% from chicken meat samples ready for consumption only which constitute 5% from different meat samples. S.aureus was detected in 3% of cooked meat samples and 25%of raw chicken samples. Escherichia coli isolates were sensitive to Clindamycin and Rifampin (100%) and showed high resistance to Ciprofloxacin (78.9%). Salmonella enterica isolates were resistant to Ceftazidime, Cefepime, Cefotaxime, Clindamycin, Ciprofloxacin and Rifampin. S. aureus isolates were sensitive to Ciprofloxacin and Vancomycin (100%) and showed high resistance to Azotreonam (100%). All Escherichia coli isolates and Salmonella enterica isolates were multidrug resistant phenotypically and 90% were ESBLs positive. All Escherichia coli isolates contained blaTEM gene while blaSHV gene was detected in 85% and 60% Escherichia coli isolates recovered from raw and ready for consumption meat respectively. Isolates blaTEM and blaSHV both genes were detected in Salmonella enterica isolate. BlaCTX gene was not detected in any of the Escherichia coli and salmonella enterica isolates. MRSA isolates were tested for detection of mecA gene and it was found that 75%were positive for mecA gene and 75% of the isolates was multidrug resistant.
