Abstract

Today many health authorities consider human breast milk the healthiest form of milk for babies. Breast milk is a unique source of food for babies, which contains all necessary nutrients that will ensure the infant’s health, growth and development. Breastfeeding has been associated with better intellectual function in children in several epidemiological studies. Human milk contains many biological factors that may be beneficial for mental development, including biologically active peptides and the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids.
The aim of this work was to study the potential protective effect of breastfeeding on siblings of ADHD children, at Alexandria University Children’s Hospital and assessment of the effect of breastfeeding on severity and associated co-morbidities of studied children with ADHD.
This Cross sectional study was conducted on (100) children aged from four to ten years (50 children diagnosed with ADHD based on DSM-5 diagnostic criteria recruited from Pediatric Neurodevelopmental outpatient clinic of Alexandria University Children Hospital Smouha ”group I” and 50 children as a control, including matched siblings of group I who are not fulfilling the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria of ADHD ” group II”). Siblings were chosen to reduce confounding factors like biological structure of the breast milk, maternal nutritional status, family history and socioeconomic factors. Children with associated neuropsychiatric, genetic or systemic diseases and mothers who were unable to recall the breastfeeding data were excluded by the researcher.
There was male gender predominance in ADHD group with mean age (7.38 ± 2.32) years in ADHD group compared to (7.04 ± 2.59) in control group. As regards to the socioeconomic data, More than 70% of studied sample were classified into very low and low classes.
In the present study, the inattentive type was 22% of cases while hyperactive type was 10% and combined type was 68%. And Forty percent of the studied ADHD patients had positive history of consanguineous parents, by comparing the two groups: There was no statistically significant difference between ADHD group and control group as regards their mode of delivery, their antenatal, perinatal history and NICU admission.
