Abstract

Insertion of VP shunt is routinely done by all neurosurgeons. Implantation of VP shunt system should be done by well-qualified neurosurgeons in order to limit or avoid shunt complications. from this study we can conclude that there is no consensus regarding the most cost-efficient means of evaluating suspected shunt malfunction. A complete battery of tests is ordered when a child with suspected shunt malfunction. However, the initial triage using clinical examination and a CT scan of the head considerably narrows the differential diagnosis. CT scan is better in detection of complications of shunt tube itself as the shut tube appears hyper dense. CT scan with 3D reconstruction is able to view the whole length of the shunt so it able to detect shunt breakage and shortening obviously. MRI is superior to CT in detection of cranial infection. US is a good modality in diagnosis of abdominal complications of VP shunt.
