Abstract This study was conducted to investigate the effect of light curing distance on water sorption and water solubility of self-etch adhesives. A total of 80 discs like specimens (6mm x 1mm) were used in this study. The discs were equally divided into 16 groups (n=5) according to the two levels of the study, the first level is the curing mode of different adhesives (light and dual cure self-etch adhesives) and the second level is the light curing distance ( 0 and 10 mm distance of light curing ) The discs were first desiccated in a desiccator to obtain the base mass (M1) then stored in distilled water for 7 days to obtain the wet mass (M2) then re-desiccated to get the dried mass (M3). Were the samples stored in an incubator during the whole procedure to insure constant temperature (37°C). The volume was then calculated using the formula (V = πr2h) and Then water sorption and water solubility of each sample were calculated using the equations: (Wsp= ) (Wsl= ). Results of water sorption and water solubility measurements showed that: there was a variable increase in amount of water sorption and water solubility in light cured adhesives more than dual cured adhesive, also in groups done at 10 mm light curing distance than those done at 0 mm distance, which proofs that there is an effect of degree of conversion on water sorption and solubility. SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS 65 from the results of this study it’s advisable to carefully follow the manufacturer’s manual of each adhesive, and to as much as possible decrease the distance between the light cure tip and the adhesive, and to use dual cure adhesives in case of deep cavities. |
