Abstract

In the present research, a semi-batch fixed bed pyrolysis reactor was designed and assembled to study the different pyrolysis parameters on the product yield of different biomass and wastes feedstock. Two different biomasses, mixed wood sawdust (WSD) and sugarcane bagasse (SB) were used to investigate the effect of temperature, particle size and purge gas (N2) flow rate on the yields of the products. Experiments were carried out at the pyrolysis temperatures of 350 to 550 °C with step 50 ºC, particle size ranges were 0.25<Dp<0.5, 0.5<Dp<1, 1<Dp<2 and Dp>2 mm, and nitrogen flow rates of 100 to 500 cm3/min with step increase of 100 cm3/min. A maximum bio-oil yield of 46 wt% was obtained at temperature of 450 ºC for wood sawdust and 45 wt% was obtained at a temperature of 500 °C for sugarcane bagasse, particle size of 0.5<Dp<1 mm with nitrogen flow rate of 200 cm3/min. The bio-oil and bio-char have been characterized by different instrumental method such as Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDX).
