Abstract

Child abuse or child maltreatment has many types like:- physical, sexual, or psychological maltreatment or neglect of a child or children, especially by a parent or other caregiver. Child abuse may include any act or failure to act by a parent or other caregiver that results in actual or potential harm to a child and can occur in a child’s home, in the organizations, schools or communities the child interacts with. Neglect refers to the failure of a parent to provide for the development of the child where the parent is in a position to do so in one or more of the following areas:- health, education, emotional development, nutrition, shelter and safe living conditions. Neglect is thus distinguished from circumstances of poverty, in that neglect can occur only in cases where reasonable resources are available to the family or caregiver. The aim of the study.The present study aimed to assess pattern of family’s abuse and negligence exposure among nursing school students. A descriptive exploratory research design was utilized on a purposive sample of about 437 male and female nursing students in selected nursing schools and aged from 15 -18 years and willing to participate in the study. The study was carried out at nursing secondary schools:- ministry of health nursing school 90 female and 62 male in zohra nursing school, health insurance nursing school 129 female students and university nursing school 54 female,114 male students.Administrative approvals were obtained from the dean of faculty of nursing Minia University to directors of nursing secondary school before implementation of the study. Data of the current study were done by researcher from October 2016 to April 2017 once official permissions were obtained the 437 nursing students who included into the present study while 12 students refused to participation in the study, meeting with head master and teacher to explain the nature and purpose of the study, the purpose and nature of the study were explained by the researcher through direct personal communication prior starting to their participation in the study to the students. Considering the results of the present study and the available evidence, it can be concluded that students exposure to all types of abuse from their families the majority of students were emotionally abused and neglected , two third of the nursing school students have satisfactory level of knowledge about family abuse and one third percentage had unsatisfactory knowledge about family abuse. It was illustrated that there is a statistical significant relation between age and psychological abuse, father salary and physical abuse, age and sexual, emotional abuse, gender and sexual abuse, father education and emotional abuse, age, number of sibling and negligence, father education and neglect and environmental characteristic and both emotional abuse, neglect. Recommendations Based on the findings of the current study it was recommended that:-Developing educating program for student to protect them from child abuse. Parents educational needs must be addressed to determine their needs for continuing education programs. Providing educating program and training courses regarding child abuse and negligence and how to deal with their children for parents. Developing educating program for teachers to enhance students’ knowledge about child abuse and neglect. Replication of the study on a larger probability sample from different geographical areas in Egypt to obtain more generalizable data. Future studies have to be carried out in order to assess factors associated with their abuse and negligence.
