Abstract

This study amied to investigate the effect of seeds (pods) & leaves of elephant ear (Enterolobium cyclocarpum) on liver damage initiated by carbon tetrachloride (CCL4). Forty (40) adult male albino rats, weighting (159±10 g) were divided into (8) groups, each with five rats. One of them was kept as a control (-ve) Group, while the rats of other five groups were injected by carbon tetrachloride. The pods & leaves powders were added at apercent 2.5%, 5% from the basal diet and given as a single and as a mixture of seeds & leaves (elephant ear). Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, albumin, total protein, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), catalase (CAT), lipid profile cholesterol, tri-glycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c), atherogenic index (AI), urea, creatinine & uric acid assayed and histopatholigical changes were examined. from the obtained results it could be concoluded that the best BWG (g) was recorded for hepatic rat fed on (mixture pods & leaves 5%). Mixture (pods & leaves 5%) caused an enhancement of liver functions, lowering GOT and GPT enzymes. As
regards to serum SOD, catalase (CAT) or GPX, the best treatments are considered (mixture pods & leaves 5%). Histopathological investigation confirmed the biochemical changes considering the liver and kidney function. Key words: Elephant ear (Enterolobium cyclocarpum) pods & leaves, liver functions, SOD, CAT, GPX, glucose, kidney functions, histology.
