Abstract

The present study was conducted during the period extended from October, 2016 to September, 2017 to investigate the prevalence rate of hydatid cysts of 568 slaughtered animals (117 camels, 102 cattle, 148 sheep, 103 donkeys and 98 Buffaloes) at five slaughter-houses (Diarb Negm, Ibrahimia, El- Mansoura, Zagazig and El Basaten) and from Giza zoo in Egypt. The morphological and molecular characterizations of the detected hydatid cysts were investigated. The results revealed that (9.15%) of the slaughtered examined animals were infected with hydatid cysts. The prevalence rate of cystic echinococcosis was 15.53%, 13.51%, 12.82%, 0.98% and 0.0% in donkeys, sheep, camels, cattle and buffaloes, respectively.
Regarding to the predilection sites of hydatid cysts it was found that the liver was the most predominant site of infection (51.92%) followed by lung (23.08%). The mixed infection of both lung and liver was observed in (23.08%), while, mixed infection of lung, liver, spleen and lymph node was detected in (1.92%). In donkeys and sheep, the liver was the most common site with a rate of 87.50% and 50.00%, respectively. While, in cattle and camels, lung was the most predominant site with a percentage of 100% and 46.67% respectively.
Dealing with the total number of the collected hydatid cysts, it was indicated that the total number of cysts counted from all infected animals was 610 cysts and the mean number of cysts per animal was 19.50, 10.44, 3.47 and 1 for sheep, donkeys, camels and cattle, respectively
It was noticed that the small sized cysts showed the highest percentage (67.21%) followed by the large size ones (18.20%), while the medium sized ones showed the lowest rate (14.59%).
