Abstract

Mycotoxins are natural contaminants produced by different fungal species.
Their occurrence in food and feed poses a threat of human and animals. This threat
is caused either by a direct contamination of food or by a carry-over of mycotoxins
and their metabolites into milk after consuming of contaminated feed. To protect
consumer health and to reduce economic losses, surveillance and control of
mycotoxin in food and feed has become a major objective for producers, regulatory
authorities and researches worldwide.
This study was conducted to determine the occurrence of aflatoxin,
ochratoxin and zearalenone in a total of 120 raw cow, buffalo, sheep and goat milk
samples which were collected randomly from Mansoura City, Egypt by using Ultra
High Performance Liquid chromatography (UHPLC).
Concerning raw cow milk samples, all milk samples (100%) were
contaminated with aflatoxin M1 in a range of 146.10 to 8547.70 ng/L with a mean
value of 1609.69±460.43 ng/L. All examined raw cow milk samples were
exceeding the permissible limits according to ER (1990) and EC (2006) limits
while 15 (50%) samples were exceeding the US FDA (1996) permissible limit.
In raw buffalo milk samples, 12 (40%) were AFM1 contaminated in a range
of 187.30 to 4646.80 ng/L with a mean value of 1187.06±360.02 ng/L. All
examined raw buffalo milk samples were exceeding the permissible limits
according to ER (1990) and EC (2006) limits while 6 (50%) samples were
exceeding the US FDA (1996) permissible limit.
