Abstract

The work described in this thesis has been undertaken with the aim of searching for naturally occurring substances from the marine sponge Xestospongia testudinaria, to be used as natural pesticides, against B. tabaci and A gossypi. One type of marine sponges that are available in Red sea, was collected and bioassayed for insecticidal activity. Based on the data obtained from bioassay, marine sponge X. testudinaria was studied in details for its chemical components and also as insecticides against the insects under investigation. Through this investigation, useful information was obtained from the application of various chromatographic methods, such as CC and TLC, as well as spectroscopic methods, such as ESIMS, GC/MS, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HMBC. Processing of Xestospongia Testudinaria by Repeated chromatographic separation and structure elucidation have resulted in separation and identification of nine natural products, in addition to, eleven naturally occurring products were identified by GC/MS technique. The identified products could be classified into steroids, bromo acetylenic fatty acids, bromo acetylenic fatty ester, maleimides, nucleosides, saturated fatty acid methyl esters, unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters and the unsaturated fat. The mentioned isolated compounds have been reported to our knowledge previously from the marine sponge X. testudinaria except the known compounds (8, 9 and 20) were reported from this sponge for the first time. The compounds showed different insecticides activities towards the two tested insects. from the above mentioned data, we recommended the use of X. testudinaria extracts or its active ingredients as a natural insecticides to control the cotton sucking insects Bemicia tabaci and Aphis gossspii after investigation its field experiments.
