Abstract

To optimize maternal health, all women must have access to high quality care during labor. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of designed nursing guidelines on quality of nursing care rendered to women in first stage of labor. Subjects and Method: A Quasi experimental design was conducted. Setting: At Obstetrics and Gynecology department in Altakhasosy Hospital, Al Azhar Hospital, General Damietta Hospital and Kafr Saad Hospital in Damietta city. Sample: All available nurses (50) worked at previous mentioned settings and the pregnant women in first stage of labor in previous mentioned setting (195) during the study period. Tools: four tools were used for data collection. Tool(I) self-administered questionnaire for nurses. Tool (II) Nurses’ observational checklist. Tool (III) structured interview questionnaire for the women. Tool (IV) satisfaction rating scale. Results: The result of present study show that the majority (94%) of the studied nurses had improvement of nursing knowledge regarding nursing care during first stage of labor after implementation of nursing guidelines, but they have insufficient practices in some procedures. The higher percentage of studied women (85.6%, 87.6%, 85.1%) were satisfied with general environment, communication, physical care, psychological care and involving in decision-making after implementation of nursing guidelines. Conclusion: Showed utilization nursing guidelines for management of the first stage of labor improve the level of nurses knowledge and practice. Also, improve satisfaction level of women. Although nurses practice improved after nursing guideline implementation, some practices such as monitor labor progress by using partograph, palpation of uterine contraction and vaginal examinations, lightly improved due to the hospital policy. Recommendations: There are needs for conducting an educational and training programs to improve nurses knowledge, practice regarding nursing care during first stage of labor and conduct further studies to identify factors responsible for the low quality of nursing care during childbirth to improve maternal satisfaction.
