Abstract

Breastfeeding problems are most common in mothers after childbirth, if appropriate health care is not applied. Mothers are affected by these breastfeeding problems within the first 3-5 days of the postpartum period. Some studies have shown that the percentage of breast engorgement reaches to (22.2% -28.9%) and 35% of mothers stop breastfeeding during the first week after birth due to cracked nipple. These problems are not life-threatening, but may lead to serious complications if they are not treated properly. Lack of proper health education, beliefs and cultural practices during the postpartum period force mothers to neglect proper breast feeding techniques and breast care. This neglection and ignorance leads to exaggeration and in turn leads to over- To stop breastfeeding. Therefore, mothers should be provided with teaching program on breastfeeding problems, how to manage and how to prevent them. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching program on knowledge among postnatal mothers about breastfeeding problems. Quasi-experimental (pretest- posttest) research design was used to achieve the aims of this study. The sample included 350 postnatal mothers in the villages of Minia city in this study. The result of the current study revealed that more than half of the studied mothers did not have a good knowledge about breastfeeding problems and its management before applying the teaching program, but after the implementation of the program, the rate of knowledge of mothers reach to the majority of the mothers( 97.4%) had good knowledge on breastfeeding problems and its management. There was high statistical significance association between demographic characteristics such as occupation, education and income with the pretest knowledge scores of mothers. While there is no relationship between pretest knowledge scores with mother’s age and place of residence.
