The study area is located on the western side of the Gulf of Suez, it occupies an area of about 10568.2 km², extends between latitudes 27 ̊ 59′ 18″, 29 ̊ 8′ 44″ north, and the longitudes 31 ̊ 44′ 34″, 33 ̊ 14′ 40″ East.
The study area is bordered from the north by the main channel of Wadi Arabah, from the east by the west coast of the Gulf of Suez (from the Ras AZ-Zafaranah in the north to Al–Mallahah Sebkha in the south), from the south it extends along the water-dividing lines between Wadies of Khurm Al-Ayn and Abu Had - inside the boundaries of the study area -, and the Wadies of Jarf, Darah and Qina – out of the boundaries of the area -, and from the west, the northern part of it extends to above contour line of 500 meters, while the southern part of this border extends along the dividing lines between the Wadies of Muhir at-Tarfah, al-Hushiyyah and Abu Had – inside the boundaries of the area - and the Wadies of Abu Ajram, Abu Sayyal and Abu Ghaza - out of the boundaries of the area -.
The study content is discussed through five chapters beginning with an introduction, and followed by a conclusion, several appendices, and a list of Arabic and foreign sources and references.
The introduction of the study discusses the location of the study area, the reasons for selecting the subject, the objectives of the study, the methods of research, and sources of study and their contents.
The first chapter discusses the Natural characteristics of the study area, which was discussed through three main axes; the first one discusses the descriptive characteristics of the region, which discusses the heights, slopes, the descriptive sectors and the age stage of the study area, in order to identify the general topographic appearance of the region and its division into morphological sectors having distinctive features. the second one discusses the geological characteristics of the region through the study of the geological formations in the study area, which extends from the Archaean era until the Holocene period, and then the study of the geological structures through the distribution of faults, folds with their both types, cracks, and joints. The last one discusses the climatic characteristics of the region by analyzing available climate data, such as solar radiation, temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind, evaporation rates, relative humidity, the amounts of clouds, and precipitation that have a great effects on the effectiveness of various geomorphological processes, and the relationship of climatic characteristics within the region to the extent of geomorphological activity, especially at the present time.
The second chapter discusses the impact of climate on the elements of weathering and movement of materials, which was discussed through two main axes; the first one discusses weathering through the study of mechanical weathering processes such as thermal expansion, freezing, melting and crystallization of salts, and the resulting geomorphological forms such as Block separation, Granular disintegration, fragmentation, Rock shattering, and Desiccation cracks, It also deals with the study of chemical weathering processes such as Solution, Carbonation, Hydrolysis, Hydration, and oxidation, resulting in forms such as Desert varnish, Exfoliation, Honeycomb pits, Tafoni, and others. the second one discusses the movement of materials on the slopes by studying the forces that influence the movement of materials on slopes - especially those related to climate - and study the factors of resistance to this movement, as well as the study of the types of slopes and factors of different forms of slopes, and transport operations of materials, besides the study of slopes processes, such as Land slide, rocky creep and rapid flows, and how much closely they are related to the dry climate conditions prevalent in the study area.
The third chapter discusses the impact of climate on the elements of water denudation, which was discussed through two main axes; the first one discusses the morphometric aspects of drainage basins and networks were discussed and analyzed, and the relationships between the variables of drainage basins and networks were explained. These variables have an impact on the patterns of surface runoff (Floods). the second one discusses Water action, through the study of stream-floods and sheet-floods, and their action of erosion and deposition in the study area, then studying the forms of water erosion such as rain Splash, erosion of rills, gully erosion, lateral erosion and under cutting, Retreat of Scarps, pediment, bad lands and Inselberg, As well as the study of forms of water sedimentation, such as Alluvial Fans, Colluvial Cones, Bahada, Peri-Pediment and pebble islands.
