Abstract This essay was conducted to review the epidemiology, pathophysiologic mechanisms, clinical picture, and managements of the most common chronic muscle pain disorders including: myofacial pain and fibromyalgia. Understanding the pathophysiology of chronic muscle pain disorders is essential for ideal management. Medical treatment is the corner stone in management of chronic muscle pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Other medications include paracetamol, tramadol and antidepressant. Non Pharmacological therapy include patient education, balanced rest , exercise, dietary advice , weight reduction and manual therapy and massage are of great values . Invasive treatment include trigger point needling and injection. Multi-disciplinary treatment program using a team of health professionals (physicians, nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists, physical therapists, massage therapists, occupational therapists, mental health care workers and social workers) has been used successfully in man¬agement of chronic muscle pain. |
