Abstract

Colposcopy is one of screening tests that are performed to detect disease that causes specific morbidity or mortality before symptoms are evident. Despite government and health services for screening programs there are neglecting and ignorance of women toward utilization of colposcopy as a preventive method for decreasing gynaecological morbidity and mortality. In Egypt opportunistic screening still does not cover all target population and even the high risk groups are screened accidentally. The current situation requires effective multidisciplinary efforts to elevate women’s awareness and to develop a control system. This system will detect those who are missed out. The nurse has and will have a brilliant and substantial role to have these ideas suitable for application in a developing country like Egypt.
The present study aimed to assess women’s knowledge and reactions toward colposcopy. the study was conducting at early cancer detection unit of Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital. Data collection for this study was carried out for 6 months in period between 1st September 2012 to the end of march 2013.
The current study involved 200 women with different age groups and different educational levels who were attending early cancer detection unit of Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital.
The data collected from the women through structured interviewing questionnaires was used for history taking including sociodemographic data, obstetrical history and women’s knowledge and reactions toward colposcopy.
Likert scale was used to assess attitude of women toward colposcopy.
The present study revealed that:
• The majority of the study group were not worked and had low and moderate educational level.
• The majority of the study group had unsatisfactory knowledge about colposcopy and cervical cancer
• The majority of women sample had positive attitude towards colposcopy as a preventive measure and most of them came to hospital with complain.
• There was a highly statistical difference observed between women’s educational level and knowledge regarding colposcopy.
The present study recommends that:
• Developing & disseminating educational material to raise and upgrade the awareness of women about the importance of colposcopy.
• Availability gynaecological services with other existing maternity services as antenatal and family planning for the purpose of case finding.
