Abstract

Osteoporosis is one of the most commonly occurring bone diseases, characterized by progressive loss of normal bone density accompanied by the deterioration of its microarchitecture. It causes bone resorption, decrease in bone mass and fractures, leading to severe pain, deformities, and secondary complications that may be fatal. Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis is the most common cause of secondary osteoporosis that results from long-term and high dose use. Glucocorticoids may result in decreased osteoblast activity which, in turn, leads to reduction in bone formation. They also have direct effect on osteocytes, resulting in a surrounding area of hypomineralized bone. In addition, they stimulate osteoclasts to increase bone resorption. Lycopene is an open-chain, unsaturated carotenoid that imparts red color to tomatoes and other fruits. It is associated with the prevention of some chronic diseases and cancers in the human mainly due to its antioxidant properties.
