Abstract from nowadays engineering point of view, Hydrometry is the science concerning with hydraulic laboratories, hydraulic measurements, and hydraulic measuring devices. Lately, the science involved methods of handling the measured data and the software used in converting the device data into readable form. This brought about new scientific topics such as “Hydrometrics” and “Hydroinformatics”. Acoustic Doppler Velocimeters (ADV) are used to measure the three dimensional velocity components and the three dimensional turbulence components leading to the calculation of turbulent shear resistance to the flow in laboratory flumes and field streams. In this study, ADV problems in the so-called old ADV system are introduced in details. To overcome these problems, suggested techniques were presented through the new ADV system designed and its advantages were discussed. The data files were post-processed using a new co-product; Matlab Code for ADV Data Post-Processing (MCAP). Simple experiments were conducted to show how to apply the techniques suggested in data sampling and data handling. The case of flow upstream box inlet spillway was investigated using the old ADV system and the case of flow in partially covered trapezoidal open channel was investigated using the new ADV system. It was found that the new ADV system and the suggested laboratory and Matlab programming techniques can sample and post-process ADV data with accepted accuracy. It is hoped that these suggested new techniques give a new insight to the hydraulic researchers and hydraulic engineers. |
