Abstract

Vitamin D deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency and one of the most common undiagnosed medical conditions in the world. The manifestation of vitamin D deficiency in children is referred to as rickets, and in adults, osteomalacia. The most common cause of this disease is a physiological deficiency in vitamin D. The associated problems include deformed bones.
Vitamin D deficiency causes a decrease in the efficiency of intestinal calcium absorption and results in a decrease in ionized calcium. The calcium sensor in the parathyroid glands immediately recognizes the decrease causing the parathyroid glands to increase the production and secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH).
A vitamin D deficiency can occur when usual intake is lower than recommended levels over time, exposure to sunlight is limited, the kidneys cannot convert 25(OH)D to its active form, or absorption of vitamin D from the digestive tract is inadequate. Vitamin D-deficient diets are associated with milk allergy, lactose intolerance, ovo-vegetarianism, and veganism.
Maternal vitamin D levels strongly correlate with neonatal levels. Maternal vitamin D deficiency is a real problem in Egypt; this is generally related to high BMI, low fish consumption, low educational level, and limited skin exposure.
So, the aim of our study was to Measurement of Vitamin D level in healthy full-term neonate.
A prospective case control study was conducted on 85 subjects of neonate and their mothers which recruited from Neonatal Intensive Care
